Hello September!
Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. It is loaded with so many opportunities to document family traditions. From the first day of school to the last cookout of the season, the rich colors and golden hues of Fall make for breathtaking photo backdrops to capture these memories.
There is so much beauty to capture this time of year, that is may be hard to know where to start.
Here is a list of 9 photos to take in September to start documenting Fall with your family.
Back to School
The first day of school may have already passed, but it’s never too late to snap a picture of your kids going to school. Try to capture their morning rituals, waiting for the school bus, after school snacks and even homework time.
Apple Picking
If you’re fortunate enough to live close to an apple orchard, I highly recommend doing this activity with your family. It’s a great alternative to the pumpkin patch and you can capture some great storytelling images of your family.
Baked Treats
The fun does not end after you’ve picked all those delicious apples! Find an easy recipe and bake some treats with your kids. Making fresh baked cookies is also a great way to welcome fall. Make sure to get shots of the baking process and tasting the end results.
Labor Day Traditions
Labor Day is traditionally known as the last holiday of the summer. Are there any traditions that your family does for this holiday? Maybe you take one last lazy day at the beach. Or, it’s the last cookout of the season. Document this holiday by photographing how your family celebrates the end of summer.
Playing in Leaves
What better way to bring in Fall than by playing in the leaves! If the leaves have not started to fall yet, take a stroll through a tree-lined street or park and take in all the changing colors of the season.
Farmers Market
Fall at a farmers market is not to be missed. It’s harvest time and all of the fruits and vegetables of the summer make way for fall’s colorful and flavorful root vegetables. Try going early in the morning when it’s less crowded and there is a little chill in the air. You’ll be able to capture the feeling of the market along with all the lush colors of the produce.
Football
The first game of the season! Someone is probably wearing their favorite player’s jersey, there is food and drinks and excitement is in the air. This is the perfect time to get some candids of your family getting together to cheer the team to victory! If there is a tailgating event, try to document the day as it unfolds. Capture the setup, the food, kids playing, and the fans.
Fall Decor
If you decorate your home for fall, try to get some before and after pictures to show the transformation. If you don’t decorate, take a stroll around your neighborhood and take in some of your neighbors fall decor.
Family Portraits for Holiday Cards
Holiday cards are the perfect way to keep in touch with old friends and distant family. The colorful leaves and warm colors of Fall make it the perfect time to snap a picture with your family. Remember to grab your tripod (or hire a photographer) so that you can get in the picture too!
